A shocking, Game Of Thrones-esque twist has Katie Rife and John Teti in mourning for this week’s True Detective DVR Club, but we can’t linger on that sadness forever. So our two staffers also offer some unsolicited advice for the four True Detectives, each of whom gets a bit of guidance in our “Don’t Do That/Keep It Up, Buddy!” segment. Katie and John also praise some inspired audio moments in this week’s episode. Plus, we wonder what will happen to those two crazy dames shacked up in a motel, hiding from the mob and enjoying Girls Only Movie Night—one of many loose ends True Detective has to tie up before next Sunday’s finale.

For this week’s edition of Film Club, A.V. Club film editor A.A. Dowd and staff critic Ignatiy Vishnevetsky take a look at Transformers: The Last Knight, which finds Michael Bay, the maestro of pyrotechnic wreckage, pitting alien robots against the audience’s patience for the fifth time. Yes, it’s another overlong, often incoherent robo-slug-fest full of terrible characters and dazzlingly realized explosions—though by now, it seems like even Bay is bored with this stuff.

Disney’s new version of The Jungle Book, shot on sound stages and featuring an all-star menagerie of celebrity voice talent, has earned overwhelmingly positive reviews. In this episode of Film Club, A.A. Dowd and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky sit down at Farmhouse Tavern to try and articulate why they’re not as enthusiastic about the adaptation as some of their peers and colleagues are. From there, the two segue into a larger discussion about special effects—how they age, why some work better than others, and which ones have truly stood the test of time.

Welcome back to Mailbag, a series about the sometimes weird, sometimes fun stuff we get in the mail. Today, DMX is back but in a really uninspiring way. Dog Eats Rabbit is a new “collaborative” album between rapper DMX and LA dubstep duo Blackburner. But, as Editorial Director Josh Modell points out, the album is less a collaboration and more a collection of kitschy dubstep remixes of classic DMX songs. Most DMX fans will unfortunately be disappointed.

It’s not just that Eric D. Johnson has a common surname. He shares his first and last names with multiple figures in pop culture, sports, politics, and academia, including another singing and songwriting Eric Johnson whose work also draws on influences from the realms of folk and country. So when The A.V. Club challenged the Fruit Bats leader to run a gantlet of Jeopardy!-style clues about other famous Johnsons, we could’ve composed an entire list of name twins. But as you’ll see in this episode of Talent Show, we’re far more merciful quiz masters than that—though we’re not immune to getting tricky with presidential Johnsons.

Set near Kona, Hawaii, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park is a lush beach and fishing area that has been used by the Hawaiian people for hundreds if not thousands of years. Thanks to our friends at Kona Brewing Company, we were fortunate enough to film Zipper Club playing a few songs there. In the video above, the bicoastal trio rambles through “Going The Distance,” which is one of the first songs the group released when it formed back in 2016. On record, “Going The Distance” is spacey and electronic, but toned down and acoustic on a sunny beach in Kona, it’s appropriately chill.

In this week’s assiduously cordial Polite Fight, Gus and John talk once again about the ever-enigmatic character of Peggy by examining parallel shots before and after her sudden decision to stand by her husband, Ed “The Butcher” Blumquist. John notes a drastic switch in color schemes between the two shots—a sickly green palate when Peggy is about to run away and a brighter frame with splashes of red when she takes the bus back home—and Gus focuses on the motion of the camera (or lack thereof) as it might relate to Peggy’s plight.

These are the some of the sounds produced by a very busy Game Of Thrones foley department for one of the stabbing-est episodes yet, “Sons Of The Harpy.” In today’s DVR Club, Katie Rife and John Teti ask whether HBO is pushing its aural gore beyond reasonable limits: John praises the fun choreography of Jamie Lannister’s swordfight on the beach but questions the massacre of the final moments. Our two critical combatants also assess the early stages of Cersei’s manufactured religious war and speculate on the next steps for Daenerys as chaos erupts in the heart of her young kingdom.

Rowling, TV editor Erik Adams and copy editor Caitlin PenzeyMoog are persevering—specifically, they’re persevering by re-imagining The Casual Vacancy as one of Rowling’s works of fantasy. Have you noticed that “Barry” rhymes with “Harry”? Did you notice that Howard Mollison is played by Michael Gambon, the big screen’s second Albus Dumbledore? Erik and Caity did, and it’s the most fun they managed to have with The Casual Vacancy.
