Disney’s new version of The Jungle Book, shot on sound stages and featuring an all-star menagerie of celebrity voice talent, has earned overwhelmingly positive reviews. In this episode of Film Club, A.A. Dowd and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky sit down at Farmhouse Tavern to try and articulate why they’re not as enthusiastic about the adaptation as some of their peers and colleagues are. From there, the two segue into a larger discussion about special effects—how they age, why some work better than others, and which ones have truly stood the test of time.

Welcome back to Mailbag, a series about the sometimes weird, sometimes fun stuff we get in the mail. Today, DMX is back but in a really uninspiring way. Dog Eats Rabbit is a new “collaborative” album between rapper DMX and LA dubstep duo Blackburner. But, as Editorial Director Josh Modell points out, the album is less a collaboration and more a collection of kitschy dubstep remixes of classic DMX songs. Most DMX fans will unfortunately be disappointed.

It’s not just that Eric D. Johnson has a common surname. He shares his first and last names with multiple figures in pop culture, sports, politics, and academia, including another singing and songwriting Eric Johnson whose work also draws on influences from the realms of folk and country. So when The A.V. Club challenged the Fruit Bats leader to run a gantlet of Jeopardy!-style clues about other famous Johnsons, we could’ve composed an entire list of name twins. But as you’ll see in this episode of Talent Show, we’re far more merciful quiz masters than that—though we’re not immune to getting tricky with presidential Johnsons.

Set near Kona, Hawaii, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park is a lush beach and fishing area that has been used by the Hawaiian people for hundreds if not thousands of years. Thanks to our friends at Kona Brewing Company, we were fortunate enough to film Zipper Club playing a few songs there. In the video above, the bicoastal trio rambles through “Going The Distance,” which is one of the first songs the group released when it formed back in 2016. On record, “Going The Distance” is spacey and electronic, but toned down and acoustic on a sunny beach in Kona, it’s appropriately chill.

In this week’s assiduously cordial Polite Fight, Gus and John talk once again about the ever-enigmatic character of Peggy by examining parallel shots before and after her sudden decision to stand by her husband, Ed “The Butcher” Blumquist. John notes a drastic switch in color schemes between the two shots—a sickly green palate when Peggy is about to run away and a brighter frame with splashes of red when she takes the bus back home—and Gus focuses on the motion of the camera (or lack thereof) as it might relate to Peggy’s plight.

Actor Corbin Bernsen has more than 200 IMDB credits to his name, including Arnie Becker from L.A. Concocted at the famed Carousel Bar in New Orleans, the Vieux Carré is a sophisticated and classic cocktail that evokes the spirit of the French Quarter. Fans of a Manhattan or brandy old-fashioned will find much to love about the Vieux Carré. Chicago bartender and Louisiana native Laura Kelton shows us how.

Vieux Carré
0.75 oz. brandy
0.75 oz. rye whiskey
0.75 oz. sweet vermouth
1 tsp. Benedictine
2 dashes Angostura bitters
2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters

Add ingredients to mixing glass with ice and stir for 30 seconds. Strain into a glass filled with ice, and garnish with a cherry.
